So I was checking out the Kyriarchy/Privilege 101 Page
And I was looking at the list of things they regard as common trigger warnings. If discussing one of these subjects, they say “it is considered common courtesy to put a simple “Trigger Warning: [Subject]” before {the} post.”
So basically this list proves my point about trigger warnings being trivialized because (keep in mind) trigger warnings were developed to help people with PTSD. But these people don’t seem to understand that being offensive/disturbing =/= triggering. And half of the things on here…well let’s just take a look at them.
“Swearing”
…seriously? The first one they put up is swearing?! So shouldn’t SJW’s always be putting in trigger warning’ for saying “douchefuck” and “fucking white people”? Or are they exempt from this rule? I think we can all agree that “swearing” is not a legitimate use for a trigger warning, yes?
“The Next Four:Rape, Abuse (physical, mental, emotional, verbal, sexual), Child abuse/pedophilia, Self-injurious behavior (self-harm, eating disorders, etc.)”
All understandable.
“Talk of drug use”
Now this one is just silly. You think that a post about getting high should be preceded by a trigger warning? Stoners, do take note. For the SJ Gestapo may start harassing you for your post about the sweet bong you just bought. I highly doubt someone’s post about drugs is going to “trigger” anyone into relapse.
“Suicide”
Eh, I’m kinda iffy on this one. I wouldn’t judge someone too much for using it in this case.
“Descriptions/pictures of medical procedures (even if they don’t contain blood or gore)”
Not sure how I feel about this one either. If it doesn’t contain blood or gore I don’t see why it would need a trigger warning, though.
“Descriptions/pictures of violence or warfare (including instruments of violence, such as knives or guns)”
Ok, the violence and warfare is understandable. Pictures of knives and guns? Get the hell out.
“Corpses, skulls or skeletons”
In other words, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” needs a big fat trigger warning on its DVD box!
“Needles”
Oh, c’mon! Really?! -_-
“Discussions of -isms, shaming, or hatred of any kind (racism, classism, hatred of cultures/ethnicities that differ from your own, sexism, hatred of sexualities or genders that differ from your own, anti-multiple, non-vanilla shaming, sex positive shaming, fat shaming/body image shaming, neuroatypical shaming)”
No. Discussing these things do not need a trigger warning. Remember how I said how trivialized trigger warning have become? Finest example right here. Now talking about this kind of stuff might offend you. But it doesn’t trigger you. It doesn’t cause you to have a PTSD episode. If this actually does happen to someone, I’m sorry but you are probably in the minority. Especially “non-vanilla shaming”. Do you really expect me to believe someone can be triggered by that?!
“Any time slurs are used (this includes words like “stupid” or “dumb”, which are still widely considered to be socially acceptable)”
Dumbest one so far. I mean, this is really REALLY stupid.
“Trans* degendering, or anti-trans* views of bodies”
Maybe.
“Dismissal of lived oppressions, marginalization, illness or differences”
I don’t even know what this means! I guess saying someone really isn’t oppressed, marginalized, ill, or different? Yeah, that’s totally going to trigger someone. Ugh.
“Kidnapping (forceful deprivation of/disregard for personal autonomy)”
Ok, I’m going to tell you right now: This is the last reasonable one. Be prepared for all the idiocy that’s coming up next.
“Discussions of sex (even consensual)”
Idonteven.
“Spiders”
Ok, this is coming from someone that refuses to go to Australia due to the spiders there: THIS DOES NOT NEED A FUCKING TRIGGER WARNING. EVER.
“Bugs in general”
Jesus Christ…you’re sounding like how my little sister was in Pre-school. Stop it.
“Snakes”
Well jeez, why don’t we just put a trigger warning over posts talking about any living organism since they all can potentially kill us?
“Vomit”
“Pregnancy/childbirth”
Yes, let’s put a trigger warning on discussions on how we all were created.
“Blood/Serious Injury”
Sure, maybe. But this isn’t like discussing rape or graphic violence, this is kind of a broad thing to put trigger warnings for.
“Trypophobia”
Yeah, we should totally warn people beforehand if we are going to talk about holes. God damn it, what’s wrong with you people?
“Scarification”
“Nazi paraphernalia”
Y’know, there probably are people that get legitimately triggered by Nazi paraphernalia (Holocaust survivors). But the odds are they probably aren’t on Tumblr.
“Slimy things”
My brain just split in two. Thanks a lot, assholes.
“Anything that might inspire intrusive thoughts in people with OCD”
Coming from someone with severe OCD: If that’s the case, then you better put one on EVERY post. Cause it’s not like there is a big list of things that drive us nuts. Someone with OCD can be obsessive-compulsive about…well, anything. So including this is pointless as hell.
Brb going to become an alcoholic now.
Trigger warnings about rape, abuse, etc.: perfectly understandable.
Trigger warnings about spiders: HEAD EXPLODING FROM I DONT EVEN
People should start putting trigger warnings on pictures of fish, because my fish died recently, and it might trigger me to cry about him. Or maybe trigger warnings on pictures of food because it might trigger me to forget about my attempts to lose weight and go binge on all sorts of junk, OR it might cause an anorexic person to feel awful for craving it or whatever.
Or maybe they can just stop being condescending fucking assholes who think people can’t even tolerate seeing such inane shit. I have depression. I used to cut. Seeing a picture of a razor DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO ME. And if it did? That’d be a pretty good sign that it’s time for me to seek help and fix that, don’t you think? It’s not up to fucking anybody to protect my brain from anything. Because ANYTHING can be triggering for certain people, LITERALLY ANYTHING, but you just can’t expect to go around labelling everything with trigger warnings. It’s not “being nice or politically correct,” it’s being condescending because except for truly horrible things like rape and the like, it’s like you think people can’t take care of themselves.
People who are triggered by such inane things like SPIDERS and swearing should honestly just gtfo the internet.
